Auston Matthews explains why the Leafs took away the business casual dress code

The Toronto Maple Leafs briefly flirted with a casual dress code earlier this season.

After years of showing up to matches in costume and tie, players were able to experiment a bit more. Many Leafs opted for colorful t-shirts under their blazers, and more casual sneakers and pants were mixed as well.

It would be silly to assume that the team’s pre-game outfit had anything to do with the team’s slow start, with Toronto going 2-5 in its first seven games.

But hockey teams are notorious creatures of habit, and Leafs forward Auston Matthews said the team opted to scrap the dress code after their four-game losing streak in mid-October.

The Leafs are 10-2-0 since the losing streak.

“That’s why we won,” Matthews joked to Christine Simpson in an interview on Sportsnet.

The subject of a GQ 2018 interview, Matthews never hesitated to experiment with different styles of fashion.

To Simpson, Matthews also touched on his friendship with Justin Bieber, whom he said he “geeked” the first time he spoke. Matthews credited Bieber, as well as his season in Switzerland, which prompted him to take more interest in fashion.

“Obviously, Europe has a very strong sense of fashion,” Matthews added. “So I think that’s where it all started. I like to look at Russell Westbrook, or even Bieber, as different people, athletes. You can see them as an inspiration with what they wear and try to find what works for you.

But ultimately Matthews said he was okay with the Leafs returning in costume.

“I don’t mind wearing a suit. It’s really not a problem, ”Matthews said. “But obviously it would be fun to explore and wear different things.”
