SPRING HILL, Tennessee (WSMV) – A community in Midstate mourns the loss of a mother and her son. They died just a week apart from complications from COVID-19. Austin Corbett was known as the original “Spartan Super Fan”.
“Everyone knew it was Austin Corbett and it was his team,” said Morgan Miller, one of Austin Corbett’s best friends. Morgan Miller and Austin went to Summit High School in Spring Hill together. She was one of his best friends and met him through the True Buddies program.
“He always made me feel so loved and loved and that’s what I think he made a lot of people feel,” Miller said.
News4 also spoke with Brant Pewitt who has known Austin for 19 years. He was his neighbor and responsible for school resources.
“To me, it’s his heart,” said Brant Pewitt, a neighbor and family friend.
About three weeks ago, Pewitt said the Corbett family had contracted COVID-19.
Austin’s father, Bill, recovered, but he and his mother were sent to the hospital. Austin’s mother, Maude, passed away last Wednesday.
A week later, the Summit High School graduate died of complications from COVID-19.
“It’s hard to express, especially for me because I’ve been so close to family for so long. It’s traumatic, ”Pewitt said.
The family also owns the Old School Café, a staple in the Spring Hill community. A sign at the door now reads closed until further notice.
To help the family, Pewitt created a GoFundMe page to pay for and support funeral expenses. Since then, donations have been pouring in.
“To me, it just shows their influence and impact on the community,” Pewitt said.
It’s a sign the community will never forget Maude and Austin.
“He loved everyone and everyone just loved him back,” Miller said.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for October 24 at 2 p.m. at Summit High School. To honor Austin, organizers are asking everyone to dress casually and wear the Summit Spartan colors.
