Jayhawks land crucial Jamari McDowell commitment

It was unclear who would end up landing four-star guard prospect Jamari McDowell among the finalists. Turns out Kansas Basketball wins again.

Among the wave of Class of 2023 prospects making a decision this month is Jamari McDowell, a top-100 rookie overall and a four-star player. He’s a 6’4 shooter known for his ability to score at all three levels and his ability to create his own offense.

The Mandel, Texas native has climbed the scouting rankings, with 247 Sports currently ranking him in the top 50. McDowell has long-term potential as an NBA prospect and is expected to be a double-digit scorer at the of the power conference.

And that’s who was the most aggressive in trying to land the four-star rookie, with four teams making the final cut. These were Kansas, Wake Forest, Xavier and Texas A&M, with the Musketeers seemingly falling off the radar after landing their own set of 2023 prospects. Among the other three were times when each of them looked like real threats to land him. In the end, McDowell could only choose one.

McDowell makes it the No. 2 commitment for Bill Self and Kansas Basketball, joining four-star combo guard Chris Johnson. The shooting guard position will likely be filled by Texas Tech transfer Kevin McCullar, primarily this coming season, as well as five-star rookie MJ Rice. Both players have a good chance of leaving and Bobby Pettiford is still unproven in a Jayhawks uniform.

Chances are Johnson and now McDowell will be on the rotation as freshmen a year from now, though the team is still on the lookout for other Class of 2023 prospects. includes top-30 point guard Elmarko Jackson, who has Kansas among his last seven.

Who knows Jamari McDowell’s true ceiling once he joined Kansas, but at the same time no one thought Ochai Agbaji would go from three-star rookie to Big 12 Player of the Year and All-Star Player -American and possibly in the NBA draft. . The development of the Jayhawks makes everything possible and could and should do wonders for him.
