The Edmonton Oilers are bringing nostalgia to the 2022-23 hockey season with the return of their classic royal blue and orange jerseys and the opening of an all-new team store in the Ice District with ties to the team’s old rink.

The shirts were last worn in the team’s final season at Rexall Place before switching to orange when the team moved to Rogers Place.

“Obviously, nostalgia. We’re back to the blues,” said Stu Ballantyne, president and chief operating officer of Rogers Place and the Ice District.

“We’ve loved orange for the past few years, we’ve had success in orange, but we’ve had a lot of success in blue. So really excited about the shirts.

A piece of Rexall Place can be found in the team’s new store with the original sliding locker room doors installed at the rear of the store.

“There is a lot of nostalgia here. The size is much larger than our previous store,” Ballantyne said, adding that there are a number of places fans can take selfies in the store.

“Things like the original Oilers locker room doors that are behind me, and the fact now that we’re selling used and game-worn gear.”

The new team store comes after the team store at Kingsway Mall closed in 2020.

The team’s royal blue and orange shirts will go on sale to the public on Friday and Ballantyne said he hopes the store will release more new shirts “over the years”.

Oilers jerseys, apparel, fan chains, Oil Kings merchandise and more can be found hanging from the store’s shelves and walls.

Ballantyne added that the store’s location in the Ice District is ideal for fans looking to buy something before or after an Oilers or Oil Kings game.

The official store opening is scheduled for Saturday and the store will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — with the possibility of later closings on game nights.

“We’re finally open and we’re so excited,” Ballantyne said.
