Spurs’ 50th celebration may include retro black jerseys, Alamodome

The San Antonio Spurs knocked it out of the park with fiesta jerseys and commemorations of their history in recent years. Rumors suggest they could still outdo each other in 2023.

The year will be special for the Silver and Black, as it will mark 50 years since they were renamed the San Antonio Spurs from their former moniker, the Dallas Chaparrals. The 1973–74 season was the organization’s first official season in the city of Alamo since its inception in 1967.

Over the years, dozens of legends have adapted to Spurs, including George Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. During this period, the team had seven different homes, starting with the State Fair Coliseum in Dallas and going through classics like the HemisFair Arena and Alamodome to the current AT&T Center.

If the rumors are true, San Antonio will largely honor its past for its 50th anniversary next season, which could include the return of retro black jerseys with “San Antonio” written across the chest.

San Antonio Spurs

Pounding the Rock’s Ty Jager shared a teaser on his Twitter on Tuesday with more details.

By now, most Spurs fans are familiar with a report from Monday that the team was looking to play a few home games away from the AT&T Center next season. The news has caused panic among many Spurs fans who fear they will soon be moved elsewhere, although there are no indications that this will happen.

This Spurs request has been partially granted by Bexar County, which has allowed an expansion of “away” home games only next season instead of the next two. Those terms include a rematch at the historic Alamodome, which was home to the Spurs in their first ever NBA title in 1998-99.

San Antonio Express-News writer Scott Huddleston explained why the Alamodome might have been included in the proposal:

“A source familiar with the matter but not authorized to speak said Spurs want to play two games at the Moody Center in Austin, one at the Alamodome for a 50th anniversary celebration in 2023 and an international game in Mexico City. None of the locations are confirmed, in part because some venues, including the Alamodome and Monterrey sports arenas, do not currently meet NBA standards.”

San Antonio news station KSAT also included a blurb about it in its coverage: “SS&E also wants to play a game in the Alamodome, the team’s home turf during its 1998 championship season- 1999, as part of its 50th anniversary season in 2022-2023.”
