If you were in a relationship this year, chances are you will pass many of time with your significant other, crouching down and perhaps becoming too intimately familiar with every inch of their existence, including their wardrobe. In this way, celebrities, it seems, are like us. When we look at the year in the style of an A-list, it’s the matching couples that stand out.
The Kardashians, of course, are masters of coordinating clothing, but it’s not just Kim and Kanye who have dressed alike this year (despite their split). When Kourtney first started dating tattooed Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, she became a hot topic, and by the fall, they were basically twins dressed in leather jackets and combat boots. Then of course Kim started dating Pete Davidson and hanging out on Staten Island, and it was only a matter of time before she added a few “scumbro»Flannel and sweatpants to his rotation.
I understand! Not only do we spend way too much time in our own little bubbles, but re-entering society can be intimidating. It’s nice to have a wardrobe buddy to go to town with, whether that’s your cranky romantic partner, your practical distraction, or your little green robot baby.
Below is a recap of a few celebrity-style highlights that saw us overtake in 2021.
On Instagram, Kourtney has made fun of to the implication that she changed her style for her tattooed fiance. Maybe she’s always been a Hot Topic girl at heart. Anyway, we can’t wait for the gothic wedding.

Unlike her sister, Kim is boisterous and proud of Kanye’s influence on her style. West has worked closely with Balenciaga designer Demna Gvasalia this year (who now, Ã la Ye, is simply called Demna), so it’s no surprise that Kim wears a lot more of the brand as well. You could say they are in a style group.

My God, don’t these two make you so happy!?! A $ AP Rocky and Rihanna arrived at the Met Gala so late this year that they almost missed the red carpet, but they still won our hearts with these looks that look like haute couture covers. These two are an example of a couple who don’t necessarily wear the same thing but whose sensibilities line up because they’re just as amazing. You know, they talk about clothes like some couples talk about what to eat for dinner. I imagine them showing up at the front door before a party and pointing their fingers at each other and looking at each other like that Spider-Man Meme and saying, in unison, “You look sick.”
Harry-Meghan Oprah’s interview feels like another life now. (It aired in March. Remember March?) But it was an example of a duo dressing at the highest level. Members of the Royal Family are hyper aware of the messages their clothing choices send, and in this case, Harry and Meghan each had something very specific to say. The combined effect was powerful. (And Oprah looked good on her own, too.)

It’s been a long pandemic for Ben Affleck – so long he’s been pictured kissing a mask not one but two different girlfriends. Since getting back together with Jennifer Lopez his style has gotten sharper and his paparazzi walks are more like branded campaign photoshoots, so here’s the personal growth I guess. It’s clear this couple know what they’re doing because, well, they’ve done it before.

If you ask me, a good reason to be in a relationship is to steal their shoes. Lucas Hedges and Tommy Dorfman each have their own unique sense of style, but I love the way Lucas clearly borrowed Tommy’s Loeffler Randall boots that day.
Now, this we did not see coming, but we support it nonetheless. Zoë Kravitz perfected the art of dressing casual – a slip dress herebaggy jeans the, and, of course, a lot of The Row – and his powers seemed to have rubs off on Channing Tatum. As my colleague Danielle Cohen pointed out, Kravitz seems to have given her a âDimes Square style makeover,â helping her go from Crocs to China Chalet chic. They also now literally share a stylist, so we all owe Zoë a big thank you.

The look that spawned a thousand couples’ costumes !!! Despite the fact that half of this couple ended up murdering the other.

Fortunately, some couples are in the joke. Jonah Hill and his very similar new girlfriend Sarah Brady wore matching Gucci suits and Manolo Blahnik slippers at the New York premiere of Hill’s latest film, Do not seek. If you’re going to date your twin, you might as well lean on it, right?

Personally, I think Frank Ocean was on to something here. His style mate will never outshine him, and if he starts getting too many opinions, Ocean can just turn it off. Genius!
